Advanced Symphonic Band Audition Information
Thank you for your interest in auditioning for the Advanced Symphonic Band!
The Advanced Symphonic Band is comprised of driven musicians with a dedication to practicing their instrument, learning more about playing a variety of different styles of music, and experiencing a touch of competition by attending the CBA Concert Band Festival for scores/ratings in early March each year.
We offer TWO symphonic band classes at Niwot HS — Symphonic Band (no audition required) and Advanced Symphonic Band (audition required). Please note that the Advanced Symphonic Band course is offered during the Spring semester ONLY. In order to earn a place in the Advanced Symphonic Band class, you must:
Request one of the Symphonic Band classes on your course request form. It does not matter which class you request, you will be placed into the correct ensemble based on your audition.
Fill out this Google form indicating your intent to audition.
Prepare a COMPLETE AUDITION (see below ⬇︎) and email to Mr. Hendricks at hendricks_robert@svvsd.org on/before FRIDAY, January 24, 2025).
Advanced Symphonic Band Audition Requirements:
Record 6 - 12 major scales (2 octaves, if possible) performed in 8th notes in a legato style at 120 bpm.
Record yourself performing a chromatic scale (what you deem to be) the playable range of your instrument. This should also be performed in 8th notes in a legato style at 120 bpm.
Record yourself performing two (2) selections of music, each 16 - 32 measures long, in contrasting style. These selections could be from particularly interesting portions of band music, etudes from a method book, or a selection from honor band audition music.
Please Note:
Remember, if you are interested in the Symphonic Band class, you do NOT need to submit an audition.
For course request purposes, you can sign up for either Symphonic Band or Advanced Symphonic Band — Mr. Hendricks will supply a list of Advanced Symphonic Band qualifiers to the counselors who will then try their best to populate the classes accordingly.
